Timothy O'Donnell

Timothy O’Donnell is one of the world’s most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. He finished second at the 2019 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, HI and recorded the fastest American finish ever (7:59:41). As a professional, he has earned more than 50 podium finishes, including more than 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Along with the ITU Long Distance World Champion (2009) title, his other wins include nine Ironman 70.3 victories, two IRONMAN wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy has finished 2nd (2019), 3rd (2015), 4th (2018), 5th (2013), 6th (2016), 8th (2012) and earned the top American spot in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019. In 2015 at IRONMAN Brazil, he completed his fastest IRONMAN to date at 7:55:56. He was the IRONMAN 70.3 US Pro Champion in 2012 and the IRONMAN US Pro Champion in 2011.

From Swim Team to World Champion

O’Donnell’s sporting career began when he joined his first swim team at the age of five in Roseville, CA. He began to shine in the pool during his high school years while attending Wyoming Seminary Prep (SEM) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. At SEM O’Donnell was captain of the varsity swim team, set multiple school records and earned repeated district championships and all-state honors.

Discipline to Succeed

O’Donnell attended the US Naval Academy (BS Naval Architecture) where he swam on the Varsity team for two seasons before fully committing to the sport of triathlon. As a triathlete, O’Donnell led the Naval Academy Men’s Team to two US National Triathlon Championship titles. He attended UC Berkeley (MSEng Ocean Engineering), during which time he won the 2003 U.S. Under-23 National Championships and his first of six consecutive Armed Forces Triathlon Championships.

An incredible career

In 2007 O’Donnell was assigned to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He earned spots on the US National Team and World Championships Team in 2007 and 2008, was the ITU Long Distance World Champion in 2009, and was named USAT’s Non-Drafting Triathlete of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2019. 

In 2012, O’Donnell transitioned from the Navy to focus exclusively on triathlon. Since that time, he has been a full-time professional triathlete, training, racing, and serving as an ambassador of the sport through organizations such as Team RWB (www.teamrwb.org).

O’Donnell lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife Mirinda Carfrae (IRONMAN World Champion 2010, 2013 & 2014) and their children: Isabelle, Finnian and Jameson.

Four-Time World Champion

Mirinda Carfrae

Originally from Australia, and now residing in Boulder, CO Mirinda is a one of the world’s most successful triathletes. Her 2007 70.3 World Championship win secured her ticket to the Ironman World Championship in Kona. In 2009 she set a course run record and finished 2nd in her first Kona appearance. She continued her dominance and went on to win three Ironman World Championships in 2010, 2013, and 2014. Her 2013 win included the third fastest marathon of the day including the men’s field; in Rinny fashion, her Pac-Man style run garnered another win and another new run course record (2:50:14). Mirinda is a threat at every race she enters with over 50 wins at major events throughout the world. Her Ironman 70.3 World Championship title and three Ironman World Titles and seven podium finishes in Kona in the span of a decade marks her as one the of the greatest triathletes of all time.

The makings of a champion

Growing up in Queensland, Australia, Mirinda Carfrae, widely known as “Rinny”, was a sporty child, with basketball her primary focus. At 5’ 3”, however, her true athletic potential remained untapped until a high school triathlon coach noticed her speed on the court and suggested she give multisport a go. At the age of 19 she competed in her first triathlon and shortly thereafter–with no prior background in swimming, cycling or running–made the 2001 Australian Junior Elite Team.

Her path to IRONMAN

Rinny represented Australia at the ITU Triathlon World Championships from 2001-2005, twice earning silver medals (2002 & 2003) before turning her attention to long distance racing. A victory at the Nice Long Course Triathlon (2004) and a silver medal at the ITU Long Course World Championship (2005) were early indicators that endurance was her forte; a third place podium finish (2006) and ultimately a world title at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (2007) confirmed Rinny as one of the top talents on the non-draft racing circuit.

Magical moments of her career

For Rinny the first Ironman World Championship, and her first win in Kona, will never be forgotten. Her dominance at the race and her consistency on that course delivered some memorable moments in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 she was hungry to be back on top. She started the run within striking distance of the top ladies after her best ride ever. The day ended in a new course record, new run course record, and 3rd fastest marathon of the day overall; including the men. To top off that memorable year Timothy and Mirinda got married two months later marking the start of a thrilling new chapter in their personal lives. 

In 2014 the reigning Ironman World Champion expanded her horizons to Europe, claiming victory against a highly competitive field at Germany’s iconic iron-distance race, Challenge Roth. That same summer in Kona in quest for another world championship, Rinny came off the bike in a daunting deficit to the early frontrunners. In Rinny fashion, her Pac-Man style run garnered another win and a course record that still stands today.

When not traveling the world in pursuit of triathlon’s greatest challenges, Rinny and Tim make their home with their children in Boulder, CO.
